CoreComm Message Center Tutorial

Please note: If you are using CoreComm's New WebMail system you can reach the Message Center login by clicking on the "Spam" folder once you are logged in to WebMail. Customers who are using a POP e-mail application such as Outlook Express or Thunderbird can reach the login page by navigating directly to http://defender.core.com.

To log into the CoreComm Message Center, all you need is your e-mail address and your e-mail password.

Enter your e-mail address in the Username box and password in the Password box, as shown below, to log into the CoreComm Message Center.

Click on the box labeled "save username and password" to skip this screen in the future and to be automatically signed in.

Caution: Anyone who uses your computer will have access to your account's Message Center if this box is checked.

After logging in correctly, you are taken to the CoreComm Message Center main page. The main page provides a place where you can do almost anything within the Message Center. There is a Search area, a FAQ area, a Filter Category area (where you can see a recap of what is in your Message Center and the ability to view additional details) and your Account Statistics and those of your additional e-mail addresses.

The "Account Statistics" area shows the makeup of the Message Center by categories. The image below shows that over the last 5 days 97% of all spam was "General Spam".

To see any of the filtering categories broken down by level, click on "levels"

The "Category Detail" section of the main page shows the distribution of messages by levels of the category.

The "Quick searches" help you work with only the latest messages within the last 4, 10, or 24 hours. Just click on the desired search to view the messages that match your search.

On the main page, when you click on "all", you will be able to view all the messages in the "General Spam" category. In this example, there are 117 items for the last 5 days in the "General Spam" category.

The category you are currently working on shows up in the upper right part of the screen as shown below. In this example, the "General Spam" category is displayed.

Quarantined items and Showing Messages display how many messages match this category and which of those messages are displayed on the current page.

You can change the number of messages displayed per page using the drop down menu. The options are 10, 15, 25, 50, 70, 100, 200 and 500 messages per page.

You can navigate through the list's pages using the "first", "prev page" (previous page), "next page" and "last page".

Messages may be sorted by any column by clicking the column name " by "Recipient", by "Sender", by "Subject", by message "Size" or by time "Received". (Note: If your e-mail account is the master account, you will see messages sent to your additional e-mail addresses that were quarantined)

You will have to select at least one message from the list to perform an operation on it. To select a message, click on the check box for that message.

Once you select a message you can use "Quick Release" or "Delete". "Quick Release": Sends the selected message(s) to the intended recipient’s inbox. "Delete": Deletes the message from your Message Center quarantine. You can also use the drop down menu for additional options described below.

Note: Although deleting a message is available it is not required since the Message Center automatically deletes them after 5 days.

If an e-mail message is from a trusted address, you can select the message and use the drag down menu to select the "Allow Sender" option. Once you select "Go", any future messages from that sender, assuming there are no viruses in the message, will never be blocked.

The drag down menu provides multiple other actions for a selected message including:

Release Options:

  • To Me
  • To Me & Allow Sender
  • To Recipient*
  • To Me & Recipient*
  • To Recipient & Allow Sender*
  • To Recipient & Allow Domain*

Release Options will vary depending on if you are logged into the message center using the master e-mail address associated with your account.

* = options only available if logged into master e-mail account.

Allow Sender Options:

  • Allow Sender
  • Allow Domain
  • Report False Positive

Delete Options:

  • Selected
  • All Within Listing

Once you select an action, click on "Go".

To view the contents of a message " click on the "Recipient" or "Sender".

After clicking on "Recipient" or "Sender", the contents of the message will be displayed to you.

From the main page you can edit your "Allowed List" or "Blocked List" by clicking on "edit your Allowed Senders".

To add to the "Allowed List" or "Blocked List" "simply type in an e-mail address. Once the e-mail address or domain name is typed in, click "Add Entry".

To remove an e-mail address or domain name, click on the "Remove" field.

If you are logged into the master e-mail address associated with your account you can add to the “Allowed List” or “Block List” for one of your additional e-mail addresses simply by selecting that e-mail address from drop down menu located in the middle.

Note: This drop down menu will not appear if you are logged into the message center w/ one of your additional e-mail address or if you have no additional email addresses.

To view your rule preferences, click on "preferences"

If you are logged into the master e-mail address associated with your account you will see the “Account Edit” screen when clicking “preferences”. Here you will be able to turn “On” and turn “Off” access to the message center for your additional e-mail addresses. As well as setting filter levels for your additional e-mail addresses. If you wish to set the filter level for a specific e-mail address, simply click the e-mail address you wish to change settings for.

You can personalize your rule preferences or rule preference of the additional e-mail address selected from the screen above by clicking the appropriate button for each rule. When you increase the sensitivity, you will filter out more spam messages and potentially increase the number of "false positives" (non-spam messages trapped in the Message Center quarantine). If you decrease the sensitivity you may reduce "false positives" and increase the amount of spam and non-spam messages coming to your inbox.

Turning off a rule will allow e-mail of that type to be sent to you without filtering, thereby possibly causing more spam to come into your inbox.

When you are done making changes to you rule preferences, click "Update" to apply them.

Help can be found within many places in the Message Center. Just click "help" to get expanded help topics and information.

On the main page, the FAQ section provides answers to the most common help questions asked. Just click on the question you would like answered.

The "help" page provides the opportunity to get a variety of questions answered. Help is provided for the "Top 5 Questions", "Reporting a False +", "Filtering Settings" and "General Questions".

To logout of the Message Center from any screen, you simply click on the "logout" heading at the top right of every page.
