Netscape Communicator Setup Instructions

These are the instructions you will need when setting up Netscape's Internet software suite "communicator" to work with your CoreComm account. The instructions were designed with Netscape Communicator 4.5x in mind, but will work with any 4.0 and above versions of Netscape. There may be some variation in the way things are presented and phrased in different versions of Netscape Communicator. However, they are similar enough that this should not present a problem. If you're an advanced user, the information in Names and Numbers at the end of this document may be all you need to get set up. If you're a beginning user, be sure to brush up on the Important Terms below.

Please note: This document covers several settings for communicator to answer as many questions as possible. However, the majority of people using communicator will probably only need to read parts one, two and three to successfully configure communicator for most uses.

Important Terms

Throughout this document and your dealings with CoreComm you may hear a few terms which can be confusing. Here are a few important definitions which can help you understand us:

Login Name - This is the name that you signed up with. For example, if you signed up for the address johndoe@core.com then your login name is johndoe@core.com. The login name will also be the name used to dial into our PPP system (the "web") and for E-Mail.

CoreComm Local Access Numbers

As always, before using any CoreComm local access number, please check with the operator (dial 0 on a phone attached to the line you will be calling from) to ensure that the new number will be a local call from your business or residence. CoreComm is not responsible for any long distance charges incurred when using this service.

Part One: Downloading Netscape Communicator

In order to download this program, you will need to access on of the following links using either your current web browser or an ftp program:

Windows 95/98/NT4.0/WinME/Windows 2000/WinXP
Windows 3.1
Macintosh PPC
Macintosh 68k (mac os 7.6.1 or higher)

It can take a considerable amount of time to download Netscape Communicator. Netscape's web site lists the download time to be about 90 minutes using a 28.8 modem under ideal conditions.

* Please Note: Directories on these sites are subject to change without notice. In which case please visit http://Netscape.com/download *

Part Two: Setting up a User Profile

When you first setup Netscape Communicator on your system, you will want to create a profile for yourself, so that you can save your personalized settings, and other files needed to run this program. You can also use the "User Profile Manager" to create additional profiles on your system, which can keep track of such things as multiple E-Mail addresses, separate bookmark settings, and various other options. Each User Profile contains its own mail and news settings, bookmarks and temporary cache files used by Communicator. If Netscape does not prompt you to create a profile the first time you open it, or if you want to create an additional profile, go to your Netscape Communicator program group, and open the folder named "Utilities", and run the "User Profile Manager". Once in the Profile Manager, you can create different profiles, which will store all of your settings for mail, news, and cache separately. Below are the values you will be asked for when creating a new profile.

Full Name:Your full name (ex: Jonathan Doe)
E-Mail Address:Your E-Mail address (ex: johndoe@core.com)
Profile name:Usually your first name
Path:Do not change the path. Use the default listed here.

Your Name:Your name (ex: Jonathan Doe)
E-Mail Address:Your E-Mail address (ex: johndoe@core.com)
Outgoing mail SMTP server:authmail.core.com*
Mail server user name:Your login name
Incoming Mail Server:[See additional information]
Mail server type:POP3

News NNTP server:news.core.com
Port:119
The "secure" box should NOT be checked.

When you click on the "Finish" button, you will have successfully created a new profile. If you have more than one profile, when you load Netscape Communicator, it will ask you to choose one. Just select the profile you wish to use by single-clicking on it, then the "Start Communicator" button.

Part Three: Configuring the Mail Settings

Note: You should not need to do this if you have already gone through the profile manager. You may want to, however, to verify the settings are correct.

To configure the mail settings in Netscape Communicator, you will need to be in the program. Once you are in the program, you will click on Edit -> Preferences. A window will appear with many configuration settings. You will want to choose to expand the "Mail & Newsgroups" category, by clicking on the "+" or the arrow next to this option. This will present you with additional options to choose from. You'll want to single click on the "Identity" category, which will bring up a screen that contains the following information:

Your name:Your name should be entered here (ex: Jonathan Doe)
E-Mail Address:Your E-Mail address should be entered here (ex: johndoe@core.com)
Reply-To Address:This should be left blank.
Organization:This can be left blank, or can have your business or organization name.
Signature file:This option is for you to decide if you would like a signature file attached to the end of all your E-Mails. Typically, though, this is option left blank.

Next, you'll want to click on the "Mail Server" category. The window that comes up depends on the version of Netscape you're using.

For Netscape 4.5x and 4.6x
Go to the Incoming Mail Server, and Select ADD, or if there is already something filled in for the Incoming Mail Server, click on Edit. If you can not click on the Add or the Edit button, click on the Choose button, then on Cancel right away, and you should then be able to click on Edit.

Server Name:[See additional information]
Server Type:POP3
User Name:login name
"Remember Password" checkbox
"Check for mail every (X) minutes" checkbox

Make sure the Check for mail box is selected and set to 10 minutes. "Automatically Download Any New Messages" should also be selected. Next, Click on the tab at the top named "POP" and be sure that the "Leave messages on server" is NOT checked unless you have a reason to use this feature (for example, checking mail for the same account from more than one computer). Otherwise, your mail will be left on CoreComm's server until there is too much mail, causing various problems.

Click Ok and fill in the blanks below as described.

Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:authmail.core.com*
Outgoing mail server username:This should be blank.
Use secure socket layer (ssl)...:Never

After you have completed this, you can click on the "OK" button. You have successfully configured the mail portion of Netscape Communicator.

For Netscape 4.0x
Version 4.0x has all the settings on this page. Simply fill them in as described below.

Mail server username:login name
Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:authmail.core.com*
Incoming mail server:[See additional information]
Mail server type:POP3

Make sure the "Leave messages on Server" is NOT checked unless you have a reason to use that feature (for example, checking mail for the same account from more than one computer). If you have this checked, your mail will be left on CoreComm's server, and it could eventually accumulate too much mail, causing various problems.

After you have completed this, you can click on the "OK" button. You have successfully configured the mail portion of Netscape Communicator.

Part Four: Configuring the News Settings

To configure the news settings in Netscape Communicator, you will need to be in the program. Once you are in the program, you will click on Edit -> Preferences. A window will appear with many configuration settings. You will want to choose to expand the "Mail & Newsgroups" option, by clicking on the "+" or the triangle next to this option. This will present you with many other options to choose from. You'll want to single click on the "Newsgroups Server" category. The screen you see depends on the version onf Netscape you're using.

Netscape 4.5x
Click on the Add button. If there is already a news server listed here, strangely enough, you can not modify the settings. Clicking on the Edit button will allow you to view the settings but not change them. If the settings are wrong, you must delete the incorrect server and select Add to make a new one.

Server Name:news.core.com
Port:119

The remaining boxes should stay *unchecked*.

After you have completed this, you can click on the "OK" button. You have successfully configured the news portion of Netscape Communicator.

Netscape 4.0x
All the news setting will be listed directly to the right. Simply fill them in as described below.

Discussion groups (news) server:news.core.com
Port:119

The "secure" box should NOT be checked.

After you have completed this, you can click on the "OK" button. You have successfully configured the news portion of Netscape Communicator.

Part Five: Setting the Home Page Location

The "Home Page Location" is the first web page that will appear when you start Netscape. To set the location, you will need to be in the program. Once you are in the program, you will click on Edit -> Preferences. A window will appear with many configuration settings. You will want to select the "Navigator" category. In the Location field, enter http://home.core.com.

You can then click on Ok. If you prefer to use a different home page, simply enter that in the location blank instead. Other popular home page addresses are http://www.Yahoo.com/ or http://www.CNN.com/ .

Part Six: Configuring the Publishing Wizard

When you're in Netscape Communicator, click on Edit and select Preferences. Expand the "Composer" category, by clicking on the "+" or the arrow next to this option. This will present you with many other options to choose from. Single click on the "Publishing" category. Fill in the fields as described below, just replace "username" with your user name (generally the first part of your E-Mail address).

An FTP or HTTP address to Publish to:
ftp://my.core.com/

The HTTP address to browse to:
http://my.core.com/~login

If publishing to an FTP site, enter the HTTP address to browse to:
http://my.core.com/~login

Once you have entered this information, you can click on the "OK" button, which will return you to Netscape Communicator.

Part Seven: Setting and Clearing the Cache

The cache is a place for Netscape to store temporary files, like graphics that you have already downloaded. It uses these files to display web pages that you've already visited much more quickly than if you were to download the files again. You can limit the sizes of these caches, and even clear them out, which at times is necessary due to them becoming corrupt, or taking up too much space. To alter the space allotted to the cache, or clear out this space, click on Edit -> Preferences. A window will appear with many configuration settings. You will want to choose to expand the "Advanced" category, by clicking on the "+" or the arrow next to this option. This will present you with many other options to choose from. You'll want to single-click on the "Cache" category.

Please note that all these settings are up to you to decide upon. If you are unsure what they should be, please leave them at their current settings.

The "Memory Cache" is the amount of memory (RAM) it will use for this temporary space. Depending on how much memory you have in your computer, you can adjust this size to best fit you. This space will automatically be cleared out every time you exit out of Netscape Communicator.

The "Disk Cache" is the amount of hard drive space it will allocate for these temporary files. Depending on how much hard drive space you have available in your computer, you can adjust this setting to best suit you. These files are always present on your computer, and are not deleted every time you exit out of Netscape Communicator, but will not exceed the limit you set here. If the cache grows to the limit you've specified, Netscape will remove these files at that time.

Both the Memory Cache and the Disk Cache are in unit of KB, or Kilobytes. That is roughly 1000KB to 1 MB, or Megabyte.
